My Complete Guide to doTERRA Signature Blends
I get asked almost every week: "Victoria, there are so many blends — where do I even start?" As a Certified Aromatherapist, Functional Nutrition Coach, and someone who was once completely skeptical about essential oils, I have built a genuine relationship with every one of these bottles over many years. When a friend first handed me a small box of oils and a binder, I studied them for almost two months before using a single one — because I wanted to be more than sure about anything I brought into my family's life. Let me walk you through the eight blends I reach for most, what's actually inside them, and how they fit into everyday routines.
The Blends, One by One
doTERRA Balance™
Balance is doTERRA's grounding blend. The official label lists Spruce Leaf/Bark, Ho Wood Leaf, Frankincense Resin, Blue Tansy Flower, Blue Chamomile Flower, and Osmanthus Flower — all in a base of Fractionated Coconut Oil.
The aroma is woodsy, earthy, and softly floral all at once. Think of walking into a cedar forest just after rain, with a hint of something sweet underneath. It is one of the most sophisticated-smelling blends in the entire line.
Balance is one of my go-to grounding picks, and I love pairing it with a few quiet minutes of breathing, a short walk, or some time outside. My approach has always been simple: pair a beautiful aroma with a small, sustainable habit and let the two reinforce each other.
doTERRA Citrus Bliss™
Citrus Bliss is doTERRA's invigorating blend. The label includes Wild Orange Peel, Lemon Peel, Grapefruit Peel, Mandarin Peel, Bergamot Peel, Tangerine Peel, Clementine Peel, and Vanilla Bean Absolute.
This one smells like a citrus candy shop — bright, sparkling, and just a touch creamy from the vanilla. It is genuinely one of the happiest-smelling bottles I own.
I reach for Citrus Bliss when I want the diffuser to make a room feel bright and welcoming. It pairs beautifully with opening the curtains, airing out a room, and starting the day with some intention.
doTERRA Serenity™
Serenity is doTERRA's restful blend. According to the official US label, it contains Lavender Flower, Cedarwood Wood, Ho Wood Leaf, Ylang Ylang Flower, Marjoram Leaf, Roman Chamomile Flower, Vetiver Root, Hawaiian Sandalwood Wood, and Vanilla Bean Absolute.
The aroma layers soft floral lavender with warm, creamy wood and a grounding earthiness from the vetiver. It is lush without being heavy — the kind of scent that makes a bedroom feel like a proper sanctuary.
Serenity is one of my core evening picks alongside Lavender, Roman Chamomile, and Vetiver. My philosophy is to create a simple evening routine and repeat it every night so your body begins to recognise that it's time to wind down — and a consistent diffuser blend is one of the easiest ways to do exactly that.
doTERRA Air-X™
Air-X is doTERRA's refreshing airway blend. The label lists Litsea, Tangerine, Grapefruit, Frankincense, and Cardamom.
It has an intense citrusy, woody, and faintly herbal aroma. It reads as deeply fresh — the olfactory equivalent of crisp outdoor air.
I love diffusing Air-X when I am airing out a room or during seasonal changes and travel — those moments when you want the air in a space to feel genuinely clean and refreshed. Four drops in a diffuser transforms a room quickly.
doTERRA On Guard™
On Guard is doTERRA's protective blend and probably the most recognized scent in the entire lineup. The official label includes Wild Orange Peel, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Leaf, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Leaf, and Rosemary Leaf/Flower.
The aroma is warm, spicy, and sweet — like mulled cider with a bright citrus lift and a clean herbal finish. It is cozy and bold at the same time.
I diffuse doTERRA On Guard™ Touch at my desk during the autumn and winter months. The warm spice scent makes the whole space feel like peak fall. We also keep doTERRA On Guard Lozenges in every bag for on-the-go use.
doTERRA Purify™
Purify is doTERRA's cleansing blend. The label contains Lemon Peel, Lime Peel, Siberian Fir Needle, Austrian Fir Needle, Citronella Herb, Tea Tree Leaf, and Cilantro Herb.
The scent is clean, green, and citrusy with an outdoor freshness from the fir needles. It smells like what "clean air" would smell like if you could bottle it — bright without being sharp.
I believe the best room should serve the people who live there, and Purify is one of the simplest ways to refresh a space. A few drops in a small spray bottle with water, misted around a room or fabric, and the difference is immediate.
doTERRA Elevation™
Elevation is doTERRA's joyful blend. The official label lists Lavandin Flower, Tangerine Peel, Lavender Flower, Amyris Bark, Clary Sage Flower/Leaf, Hawaiian Sandalwood Wood, Ylang Ylang Flower, Ho Wood Leaf, Osmanthus Flower, Lemon Myrtle Leaf, and Melissa Flower/Leaf.
The aroma is bright and floral with a warm, slightly exotic depth. The tangerine gives it lift while the sandalwood keeps it grounded. It smells joyful — and paired with a few minutes of movement or time outside, it is a genuinely uplifting combination.
doTERRA ZenGest™
ZenGest is doTERRA's digestive blend. The label includes Ginger Rhizome/Root, Fennel Seed, Coriander Seed, Anise Seed, Caraway Seed, Tarragon Plant, and Peppermint Plant.
The aroma is spicy, herbal, and minty — warm ginger and anise up front, with a cooling peppermint finish. It smells like a sophisticated herbal tea blend. The doTERRA ZenGest Touch roller makes it easy to apply on the go, and I pair it with the same foundations I always come back to: whole foods, plenty of plants and fibre, hydration, and movement.
How I'd Choose
If you are brand new to blends, I always suggest starting with the aroma that speaks to you first. Smell drives behaviour, which means you will actually use the oil you love the scent of. You don't need every product, and you certainly don't need to change everything at once. For mornings, Citrus Bliss or Elevation. For evenings, Serenity or Balance. For a clean, fresh home environment, Purify. For cozy autumn diffusing, On Guard is unbeatable. For a refreshing, crisp atmosphere, Air-X is transformative.
If you want one blend that gets compliments every single time someone walks into your home, On Guard is it.
Safe Use
Always dilute essential oils before applying to skin, especially on children. A 1–2% dilution (1–2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil) is appropriate for most adults. For children under ten, dilute further and apply only to the feet or along the spine. Keep oils away from eyes and inner ears. If you are pregnant, nursing, or managing a health condition, consult your healthcare provider before use. Never ingest essential oils unless you are working directly with a qualified professional. Always read the full product label before use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mix doTERRA signature blends together in the diffuser?
Absolutely — layering blends is one of my favorite things to do. Balance and Serenity together in the evening diffuser create an incredibly deep, grounding aroma. Citrus Bliss and Elevation make a gloriously bright morning combination. Start with equal drops and adjust from there based on your scent preference.
Are these blends safe to diffuse around children and pets?
Most of the signature blends are used safely in homes with children when diffused in a well-ventilated room for 30–60 minute intervals with breaks. However, certain oils are generally recommended to be used cautiously around children under two. Always consult your pediatrician. For pets, especially cats, keep diffusion sessions short and ensure the animal can leave the room freely. I recommend speaking with a veterinarian if you have concerns about specific pets.
What is the difference between a regular blend and a Touch blend?
Touch blends are pre-diluted with Fractionated Coconut Oil in a convenient roller bottle, making them ideal for direct skin application without any additional measuring or diluting. The full-size 15ml blends are neat (undiluted) essential oils best suited for diffusing, DIY recipes, or diluting yourself at home. I keep both formats — the full bottle for the diffuser and the Touch roller for my bag.
How long will a 15ml bottle last with regular diffuser use?
With typical diffuser use of 4–6 drops per session once or twice a day, a 15ml bottle will generally last two to three months for most families. If you are also using the oil topically or in DIY cleaning sprays, you will go through it faster. I usually buy two bottles of my most-used blends — On Guard and Serenity — so I never run out mid-routine.
